Fundamental Issues in Affective Intelligent Social Machines

چکیده

In the early 1990s, computer scientists became motivated by the idea of rendering human-computer interactions more humanlike and natural for their users in order to both address complaints that technologies impose a mechanical (sometimes even anti-social) aesthetic to their everyday environment, and also investigate innovative ways to manage system-environment complexity. With the recent development of the field of Social Robotics and particularly HumanRobot Interaction, the integration of intentional emotional mechanisms in a system’s control architecture becomes inevitable. Unfortunately, this presents significant issues that must be addressed for a successful emotional artificial system to be developed. This paper provides an additional dimension to documented arguments for and against the introduction of emotions into artificial systems by highlighting some fundamental paradoxes, mistakes, and proposes guidelines for how to develop successful affective intelligent social machines.

Fundamental Issues in Social Robotics

Man and machine are rife with fundamental differences. Formal research in artificial intelligence and robotics has for half a century aimed to cross this divide, whether from the perspective of understanding man by building models, or building machines which could be as intelligent and versatile as humans. Inevitably, our sources of inspiration come from what exists around us, but to what exten...

Ubiquitous Computing and Pervasive Adaptation of Social Norms in Workplace Design

The design of workplaces, namely the physical arrangement of people and machines, has an active influence on work-related issues, such as productivity and efficiency. However, even an ideal physical arrangement of machines is subject to the social and emotional intelligence of the people. It is possible to formalise the former using rules of social order, and to capture the latter using the ide...

On TAMEing robots

The recent decade has seen an upsurge of interest in affective computing; in particular, a number of computational models of emotion have been built and applied in a variety of artificially intelligent systems. In part, this interest was brought about by the growing importance of the idea of social interaction between humans and computers (be it interfaces, autonomous agents, or robots), and th...

User Issues in Social Group Recommender Systems

Social group recommender systems aim to recommend items of interest to a social group or a community of people. The user issues in such systems cannot be addressed by examining the satisfaction of their members as individuals. Rather, group satisfaction should be studied as a result of the interaction and interface methods that support group dynamics and interaction. This report first introduce...
